What to Expect from a QEEG Brain Map at MindSync Neurotraining
Curious about brain mapping but not sure what the experience actually involves? Here's a clear, honest look at what happens during your session — and why it's the starting point for everything we do at MindSync Neurotraining.
What Is a QEEG Brain Map?
QEEG stands for Quantitative Electroencephalogram — but you can simply think of it as a brain map.
It's a non-invasive way to measure the electrical activity your brain is producing and translate that data into a detailed visual map. Rather than relying on self-reporting or general assessments alone, a QEEG gives us an objective look at how your brain is actually functioning — where activity is running high, where it may be lagging, and how your patterns compare to healthy norms for your age.
At MindSync Neurotraining, the brain map is the foundation of every neurofeedback coaching program. It's how we make sure your training is built around your brain's actual patterns, not a generic protocol.
Before Your Appointment: Simple Preparation
There's very little you need to do to prepare. No fasting, no needles, and no need to change any supplements or medications.
A couple of things worth keeping in mind:
Aim for a good night's sleep before your session, as fatigue can affect your brain wave readings
Keep caffeine to your normal amount — no need to avoid it, but this isn't the morning to go overboard
Come with dry, product-free hair. Unlike systems that use wet electrodes and conductive gel, MindSync Neurotraining uses the BrainBit Flex4, which features dry electrodes. No gel, no mess — just a clean, comfortable fit.
That's really all the prep you need.
What Happens During Your Session
We Start with a Conversation
Before the recording begins, we take time to talk. I want to understand what's brought you in — what you've been experiencing, what you're hoping to work on, and what your goals are. This gives important context for how we interpret your brain map and where we focus your training.
The BrainBit Flex4 Is Applied
Next, the BrainBit Flex4 headset is gently placed on your head. This device uses dry electrodes, so there's no gel, no cap with messy wells, and no cleanup afterward. It's lightweight, comfortable, and quick to set up.
Nothing is sent into your brain — the electrodes only record the electrical signals your brain is already producing. Many people are surprised by how unobtrusive the whole thing feels.
The Recording
Once you're comfortable, we begin the recording. You'll simply sit quietly — eyes open for a few minutes, then eyes closed for a few minutes — while the system captures your brain wave activity.
Here's something worth knowing: the recording itself can take less than 10 minutes if you're able to relax your head and facial muscles. Tension in the scalp, jaw, or forehead creates what's called "muscle artifact" — essentially electrical noise that can interfere with a clean reading. The best thing you can do during this part is consciously let go of any tightness you're holding in your head and face.
We'll guide you through this before we start, so you know exactly what to focus on. Most people find it's a good opportunity to just breathe and be still.
Data Analysis
After the recording, the raw data is processed through software that filters out any remaining noise and compares your brain wave patterns against a large normative database of healthy brains in your age range. The result is a set of color-coded brain maps that show us which regions are overactive, underactive, or well-regulated.
This is what makes neurofeedback coaching so precise. Rather than guessing, we can see your brain's patterns clearly and design training that targets what's actually there.
What Does the Brain Map Show?
Your brain produces four primary types of brain waves, each associated with different states of mind:
Delta — deep rest and restorative processes
Theta — creativity, memory, and inward focus
Alpha — calm, relaxed alertness
Beta — active thinking, attention, and problem-solving
When these patterns are out of balance — too much activity in one band, too little in another — it can affect how you feel, focus, and function. The brain map shows us exactly where those patterns are showing up so that neurofeedback training can be tailored to address them.
To be clear, this is not a diagnostic process. MindSync Neurotraining is a coaching practice, and we use the QEEG to guide personalized brain training — supporting your brain's ability to self-regulate more effectively over time.
After Your Session: Reviewing Your Map Together
Once your brain map is ready, we sit down and go through it together. I'll walk you through what the patterns mean, what stands out, and how they connect to the goals you described at the start of your session.
For many people, this is a genuinely meaningful moment. It's one thing to feel like your brain won't settle down or won't stay focused — it's another to see it on a map and begin to understand why. That clarity tends to make the coaching process feel much more purposeful.
From there, we build a neurofeedback training plan grounded in your specific brain map — so every session is working toward something real.
Is It Safe?
Yes, completely. The QEEG brain map is non-invasive and painless. No electricity enters your brain — the BrainBit Flex4 only listens to what your brain is already doing. There are no side effects, no recovery time, and no aftereffects. You'll leave the session and carry on with your day as normal.
Who Is a Good Fit for a QEEG Brain Map?
A brain map is a strong starting point for anyone who wants to understand their brain function and take a data-driven approach to improving it. This includes people who:
Experience difficulty with focus, attention, or mental clarity
Feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, stress, or an overactive mind
Have trouble winding down or sleeping consistently
Want to optimize cognitive performance — professionally, athletically, or in daily life
Are simply curious about how their brain is working and want a personalized starting point
You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from neurofeedback coaching. Many people who come to MindSync Neurotraining are already functioning well and want to take their performance and wellbeing further. The brain map is where that work begins.
